1) Nowadays parents are trying to persuade their children to learn as much as possible so to make their kids more competitive when comparing to the kid's friends and classmates, actually they are trying to make their kids more competitive in the society. When children are more competitive, they can get into better schools in the future.
2) Similar to question one, parents all want their kids to be competitive so they can get into better schools and recieve better treatment and to be looked more superior compared to others. So, parents always want to compare their ids with other kids to make sure their kids are more superior.
