a)Let $y be the marked price.
Then, selling price = $y(1 - 60%) = $0.4y
cost price = selling price = $0.4y
Percentage that the marked price higher than the cost price
= [(y - 0.4y)/0.4y] x 100%
= 150%
(b)
marked price
= $1000 x (1 + 150%)
= $1000 x 2.5
= $2500
