a)mean = 6 x (1 - 20%) = $ 4.8median = 5.5 x (1 - 20%) = $ 4.4mode = 5 x (1 - 20%) = $ 4
b)Mean : No effect since the old mean is $ 6.
Median : Uncertain. ( Remain unchange or decrease.)Example 1 : (Decrease)10 , 6.5 , 6 , 5.5 , 5 , 5 , 4
Buy one less can ($6) becomes :
10 , 6.5 , 5.5 , 5 , 5 , 4
The median changes to (5.5 + 5)/2 = $5.25 is less than $5.5Example 2 : (Remain unchange) 10 , 6.5 , 6.5 , 6 , 5.5 , 5.5 , 5 , 5 , 5 , 5
Buy one less can ($6) becomes :
10 , 6.5 , 6.5 , 5.5 , 5.5 , 5 , 5 , 5 , 5
The median = $ 5.5 remain unchange. The median is impossible to increase since $6 > the old median = $5.5
Mode : Remain unchange since the number of it have no decrease.
