Is Brian McCann the game's most underrated player?

Not exactly is he underrated. He's not known well yet. Those of us who have come across him note that he is having a monster year and may be one of the best players. The fact is that he hasn't made it onto the map yet. If he keeps it up he will.

Yes he is. When most people talk about catchers they seem to only mention Joe Mauer and Buster Posey.

nah. at least people i know realize he's one of the best hitters in the game especially for being a catcher. like i watch the reds and whenever the reds play the braves whether i watch on tv or listen to the radio, he gets more praise than almost anyone. and people realize how good he is with him making the all star game every year. is he undermentioned? absolutely, but when people are directly asked about him, there are generally great things being said about him

Based on what the Y!A sections says, (and as crazy as this may sound) CC Sabathia might be the most underrated player in baseball. Seriously, ask a question and ask people to list the top 5 pitchers in baseball. Virtually nobody besides Yankees fans will mention CC. It's a joke!

But some other guys that are underrated;

Mike Stanton, Clay Buchholtz, Hunter Pence, Tommy Hanson, Dan Haren, Ricky Romero, Trevor Cahil. The list goes on.

McCann is good, and i'll agree he's underrated. But he's not the most underrated player in baseball.

I have a hard time saying he is underrated when he is on the All-Star team.

I don't think he's underrated at all actually. Maybe a little bit, considering how great of a player he is all around and with him being a catcher and all. I'd say someone like Shane victorino is equally underrated. Maybe not as good, but underrated. Same with polanco.
