The speed of English used in news is a bit slower when compared with normal conversation. so , Other than listening to english news, it is a good idea to watch english TV programme to learn spoken english under normal conversation. Yes, listening takes time to improve.

For ways to improve your listening score in a test, you can find some books related to IELTS. There are some strategies you can learn from those books. I have been reading the book "New Insight into IELTS" by cambridge university press. It covers strategies to help you to improve your listening, speaking and writtern areas in IELTS.

若要學習如何聆聽和明瞭對白的語言,語氣和語音等,你可以試探用以下的方法:
1)多閱讀本國或其他英文報章,藉以增進對字彙的認知,同時亦可以增進有關世界潮流趨勢,本國政壇變化等有更進一步了解。因此你在聆聽英語方面較為容易明白和悟性較為迅速。
2) 多收聽和收看英文電台和電視台,藉以學習聆聽語言技能;從而可以學習英語語言發音的技巧。照我個人意見,若果你已經有閱讀英文報章的經驗,肯定在聆聽英文新聞方面較容易明白和悟性較為迅速。
要有悟性,掌握句子中主要的重點;譬如某些新聞的關鍵字,風雲人物,名流事件,地區新聞,國家施政報告,黨派鬥爭,等等。若果按照這些重點關鍵字句來聆聽,希望能增加聆聽和悟性速度。
