Having a job is the way you support both you and family. Those who do not work, do not always qualify for welfare, and if they do, it is a subsistence level of life.
With a good paying job, one not only can buy things like food, car, pay rent, or go on vacations, but also save some money for larger purchases like a home, or yearly vacation.
People often "judge" you by what you do.
Manual labor may be considered lower-class, and a person with college doing professional work often is considered "middle class."
But, this is not to say that some manual labor jobs do not pay as much or more than some "professional" white collar jobs.
It's a noble profession to be a certified plumber, carpenter, truck driver, or constructions worker too.
If you do not earn a decent living, how can you have high self esteem, or be considered a "decent" citizen?
EDIT: I am surprised of all the negative answers about "noble" work. Because if you have a really good job, you are helping your community, either building something, educating others, or even serving others.
What kind of community would there be, without fast food workers, post office people, firemen, construction workers, drivers, and mechanics?
You'd find yourself without anywhere to go, and no one to help you when you needed help.
Working is a way of leaving behind, more than you take.
And for the very lucky, you may even learn to enjoy your work, and be happy that you can do a job, better than others. It's a win-win situation, when you get paid to do something, for example, that you may have actually volunteered to do, to help others.
Think about that!
