my house currently have a 2wire at&t wireless router for Internet access, and then i got a linksys wireless router from my friend. i try to connect the two with a Ethernet cable so both routers can work. but it tuen out i was wrong. my laptop detected both routers but i cannot access the internet through the linksys. is there a way to make both routers work at the same time?

here is a diagram for the concept:

Given that both units are wireless, there is not much to be gained here. Since you have no choice but to use the 2wire device as your router (because it is also your modem) about all you can do is turn the Linksys into a wireless access point

You start by having the linksys not connected at all. Plug in the power cable.
Plug an Ethernet patch cable into a LAN port on the Linksys and connect the cable to your computer.
Using the manual access the router using your browser
In the setup pages find the settings for the DHCP server.
Disable the DHCP server. (this is why you cannot get things to work)
Now in the wireless setup set the SSID if the linksys to a unique network name. Set the channel to a channel the 2Wire is not using
Set up security
save all settings
Restart the router and disconnect the computer
Now using the patch cable, connect a LAN port on the Linksys to a Lan Port on the 2wire
You do NOT use the WAN port on the Linksys
You now have a wireless access point

Hope that helps

John, this sounds like a tricky issue. It's difficult to say without actually seeing your router configurations. However, I'm curious to exactly why you would like to have both routers active at the same time? If nothing else, having both routers active will certainly cause at least minor performance issues from the processing delay. You would be able to have multiple devices connect to a single router.

As mentioned, the issue could be related to many things, not limited to ip addressing issues, Network Address Translation, connection configurations, etc. However, we do know that your Internet is good, like you mentioned.

If you are attempting to use the Linksys router for its features or something similar, it's best to put the 2wire router into bridged mode. In short, this will pretty much make your 2wire router invisible to the linksys router and it will just work as a modem.

Here is a link I found to instructions on how to change your 2wire router into a bridge, although I'm not sure if this will serve your model:

You could do search online with your router model and the keyword bridge.

Hope that helps, good luck!
