Because my passport is going to expire in August.
Is green card the only thing I need to cross the border? Or I need to have my passport with me? Is it ok to have an expiring passport with me?
My nationality does not require me to obtain a visa.

You only need youtrgreen card to go to Canada and re-enter the U.S. Since the green card is what gets you back into the U.S., it is what is required to enter Canada. a foreign passport will not gain re-entry into the U.S., so you simply do not need it for the trip.
