Why did Canadians riot because they lost a hockey match?

I've been to Vancouver many times since I live in the Pacific Northwest and I'm completely perplexed by the riot there. Such a beautiful city, why would people suddenly go out and riot over losing a hockey game? I remember the Riot in Seattle years ago over the WTO, but that had a cause behind it which was discontent with globalization. Why were there these moderately sized riots through Vancouver when they lost a hockey match?

Answer is they didn't...there were a small group of people who took things like molotov cocktails and lighter fluid with them downtown-these people were bent on stirring up **** no matter what the outcome of the game was-and since you mention the WTO deal in Seattle,if you look at the pics online from the area where/when the Vanny riot started you'd see the pics of groups of people clad in black(the same anarchists/nutjobs some of whom were probably in Seattle back then)Of course once it started if you have enough drunken people running around there will be some that will join in-many of the people that were in the streets weren't at the game-they were just in Vancouver because that's where the "party" was-so basically every loser/idiot west of Winnipeg was in downtown Vancouver that night.(the moron who set the first police car on fire was from Yellowknife,NWT-there are several pics of him doing it AND he was stupid enough to brag about it on facebook).I see your nic is Willamette so I'm guessing you live around /south of Portland-I was reading some comments on the KATU news website about it the other day and the article suggested it was "because the Canucks lost"-it wasn't,and it's not representative of the people in the area in general-no news agency anywhere outside of Canada mentions the fact that 12 THOUSAND real Canucks fans showed up the next day downtown to help clean up the damage caused by a couple hundred or so jackasses.

Hockey fans didn't riot. Thugs, criminals and other assorted miscreants did. They didn't need a reason either but they hit behind the closest thing they could find.

A group of thugs are the ones who had started the riot. They used the negative feelings of the loss to their advantage. There is some evidence they had had planned to riot all along, since they had brought bats, hammers, diesel and masks with them.

Most Vancouverites hate them just as much as the rest of the world does, believe me. Please do not paint us all with the same brush.

Have you heard of the massive cleanup on the day after the riot?

A bunch of troublemakers used the negative mood to cause trouble and the rest is history.

I'm Canadian, Vancouver born and raised, and a Canuck fan. I didn't riot. When I want booze, I go into the store and pay for it. When I am upset or disappointed, I don't go smashing stuff. I don't expect everyone else to pay for the decisions I make. My only contact with the police has been a speeding ticket once every ten years. I've never been in a riot in my life--because, like most Canadians and unlike the criminals in the riot, I had to get up to go to work the next day. The low-life rioters should try that for a change.

There are a lot of factors at play here. If you look at the first six games, there were about 100,000 people in the streets watching the games on giant outdoor television screens. And there were no riots. It wasn't the fans who did the damage after game seven - it was punks who entered the downtown area prepared to riot - regardless of who won or lost the game. Unfortunately, the area was so congested that it was very difficult to get away from the actions where the rioting was taking place. And once things escalated and the looting began, there were the usual band of opportunists who grabbed something for themselves.

Because Canada is obsessed with hockey and they got beat by some useless little Americans who think they can play hockey too

Because Justin Beiber got Scabies a popular skin mite disease that inhabits over 90 percent of the Native people in Java.

The riot was NOT caused by hockey fans!! They were just a bunch of hooligans who saw the Stanley Cup final as an opportunity to get attention and cause trouble. The riot was started well before the game was even over, and would have happened regardless of who won.

Just as a side-note, why is it that people are acting like this was the first riot to ever happen in the history of the world?! Get over it, already. And besides, nobody is talking about the positive things. The very next day, hundreds and hundreds of people gathered together to help clean up the city. The people involved in causing the damage were apologetic and expressed great sympathy. It really showed how the people of Vancouver are willing to unite together to try to right a wrong. These are good things! Yet people are only focusing on the negative. It's really a shame...
