Strontium is a metal. Phosphorus is a non-metal.

Metal is an electron donor and react to form cation.
When metal react with a non-metal, to attain the octet rule, metal will donate outermost shell electron to non-metal, and an ionic bond is formed.

the differences in electronegativity values would make it a covalent bond.
