Depends on the degree field and on the school.
A PhD from a worthless school such as University of Phoenix would be a lifelong humiliation.

Very prestigious. A PhD is the highest academic degree awarded by any university so is therefore very prestigious and takes many more years to get than a normal bachelors.

I have a PhD in physics from a great school, but where I work everyone has a PhD. The only person who's ever called me doctor is my mother, and I think she's making fun of me. So it doesn't feel very prestigious.
