1) I want to ask whether the fllowings is hydroplilic or hydrophobic:
a. fatty acid
b. glycerol

2) Why can dilute HCL break the glycosidic bonds on heating? Can any1 tell me more about the reactions involved?

thanks

1) water solubility of these organic compounds depends on the number of hydrogen bonds can be formed

a) fatty acid is hydrophobic since its hydrogencarbon chain is very long, thus the only COOH group cannot make it soludle in water.

b) glycerol has three OH group, giving it the hydrophilic and hygroscorpic feature.

2) when glycosidic bonds are formed, water molecules are eliminated. in dilute HCL, there are many water molecules. besides, acid acts as catalyst in the reaction. with heating, the reaction gaims enough activation energy to start the reaction.
