A prism makes use of the dispersion phenomenon to separate white light of different colours (frequencies). The theory behind is that different coloured lights travel in different speeds in a prism, hence leading to different refraction angles. This separates white light to its component colours.

A diffraction grating makes use of light diffraction. Light of different frequencies diffract at different angles after passing through a grating. Hence, different coloured light would be separated from one another.
