Well.. don't basketball teams try to put the ball in the hoop and the other team tries to stop it?

There are a lot of different approaches a bat can take in any given plate appearance.
They can try to work the count to draw a walk and/or make the opposing pitcher use a lot of pitches and tire himself.
They can try to go opposite field.
They can bunt.
They can squeze bunt.
They can drag bunt.
They can go for a ground out to move the runner up.
They can go for a sac fly to score somebody from 3rd.
They can hit and run.
They can swing for the fences.
They can just try to make contact.
Defensively.
You can play your infield in.
You can play your infield deep.
You can move your outfield in.
You can move your outfield out.
You can guard the lines.
You can shift your fielders to improve coverage on a certain side of the field.
You can pitch out.
You can intentionally walk.
You can try a pick off.
And yes, there is indeed a lot of teamwork in baseball. In fact, I'd say the pitcher-catcher relationship is the most important teamwork in any sport.
Forget Kobe with 40 seconds. Give me bottom of the ninth, 2 outs 3-2 count in a tie game in game seven of the world series..
