One A for every B of the same credit hours.
If you make an A(=4) on a 5-hour class and on a 1-hour class(say PE),
you can make a B(=3) on a 3-hour History and a 3-hour English class.

You probably need more math classes if you can not do this simple problem of determining an average.

So, a 3.5 is a 90. If you add all of your grades up, and divide the sum by the total number of grades, it gives you your GPA in a percentage. So if the percentage is a 90% you have a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
