The best apartment dog out of these?

In a couple of years I'll be moving to a pet friendly apartment and I was thinking about getting a dog. I have classes so would be out rough 2-4 hours a day. I would be able to give it two good long walks each day too. I also have cats, and the apartment is, well, apartment sized so not that big.

I was thinking of, either a:

Ex Racing Greyhound

Rescue Whippet

Chihuahua

or an Italian Greyhound.

The thing is, getting a rescue and the fact that I'll make sure it's cat tested (and my cats have met dogs before and were fine) do you think the sighthounds would be okay with the cats? I like Chi's and IG's but I would prefer a bigger dog like a greyhound or whippet.

Thank you!

Do consider adopting a retired racing greyhound. Not only are they really cool dogs, but they are mellow and quiet house guests. They also will happily sleep away the day, with total peace and quiet, when you are gone. They will be bright eyed and eager to greet you when you come home. You do not need to be home with them all day, they are ideal for people who work, or go to school during the day.. They are ideal for apartment living, since they are clean, quiet and couch potatoes.

If you adopt one from a rescue group that uses foster homes, you'll get a dog that is completely housebroken and already is trained in good house manners, an adult dog with the bladder control needed to "hold it" for 8-10 hours a day. They also cat test the dogs, and many will already be living with cats in their foster homes.

Greyhounds come already spayed or neutered, with all vet work and vaccinations up to date, they are fully leash trained and are already to move in to a home. Most people who have allergies are not allergic to greyhounds, they are sleek, have little dander, are low shed and have no body odor. They actually groom themselves like a cat!

These dogs are happy with well less than an hour of exercise a day, or turn out in a fenced backyard on days where the weather isn't good enough to walk them. If you want to go walking, they are happy to go, if you just want to stay inside and hang out, they are happy with that too.

They are wonderful, gentle companions, and extremely people friendly. They are not watch dogs. They will welcome anyone to come into your home. The are not yappy, and rarely bark.

Greyhounds are just amazing to watch run, they can hit 45 mph in just 3 strides. They can't be tied out on a chain or cable because of this, so they need a fenced yard - 4' tall will do, unless you plan on walking the dog a few times a day for bathroom duties.

You save a life when you adopt one of these retired professional athletes, too!
Many hundreds of them are euthanized every year when their racing careers are over! Such a sad ending for such a loving and gentle breed.

Greyhounds live longer than most large breeds of dogs at 12-14 years, or more. I know of two that actually made it to 20 years old! These dogs have many, many good years left in them after they come off of the track.

EDITED TO ADD: I can see many people here have NO idea of the disposition of a Greyhound. They are one of the mellowest dogs you can find. I have owned them for over 20 years - never met a "hyper" one yet. They are bred to be sprinters, not distance runners - they need much less exercise than most breeds of dogs. They are known as 45 mph couch potatoes - due to how super mellow and sweet these dogs are. Just because they race them - it does not mean that they are hyper. Heck - the reason they are so fast is that they spend so much time sleeping and recharging their "batteries" ... LOL.
參考: I am on the board of directors of a Greyhound rescue. Have met hundreds of them over the years! We place MANY dogs with people who live in apartments.

Don't be fooled by their size and "racing" past... We just adopted a retired greyhound about 4 months ago. We have cats and live in an apartment. Best, most mellow dog I've ever beed around.
Loves to sleep all day and just be with his people at night. Ignores the cats. He likes to be social with other greyhounds, but isn't full of energy or needing to run (they are short burst of energy sort of dogs). We take two long-ish walks a day on top of the usual potty breaks.
I should note that he's not a puppy - but certainly young - so it's not just that he's older or lazy... 3.5 years.
I've been a cat person all my life and I can't tell you what an easy wonderful transition it has been into dog ownership.
If you go with the greyhound work with a group that fosters and you will be helped every step of the way.
Enjoy!

You definitely don't want a big dog in an apartment. Especially a breed that is used to running around and having lots of activity

I do not feel I might be an excessively well condominium character, so I have not fairly on account that so much idea. I might say that I recognise my means round a Beagle approximately as good as so much tho'. First should you pass approximately it the proper means, Beagles are an effortless breed to potty coach. But, they do stay inclined to the occasional coincidence. This is brought about via their potential to grow to be so preoccupied with whatever that they fail to remember that they ought to pass. Don't fairly see to many Beagles within the obedience ring, and for well purpose. But nonetheless, IMHO Beagles are effortless to coach, you most effective ought to do it the Beagle means. Conventional coaching could be a very bumpy street. Bet so much have no idea that that is honestly within the breed commonplace. "Manners The hounds ought to all paintings gaily and cheerfully, with flags up--obeying all instructions cheerfully. They will have to be damaged to heel up, kennel up, comply with quickly and stand." Beagles, like their cousins the Fox Hound, have an severe percent force, and don't do good if left on my own for lengthy durations of time. So very more commonly a character is a ways bigger off to have 2 Beagles as a substitute of only one. All in all there are definitely different breeds that might be means bigger condominium dwellers.

I think they all would do good in apartments but a chihuahua is probably your best choice, so would and italian greyhound.
But here are some other good apartment dogs,
Boston terrier,
Dachshund,
French bulldog,
Brussels griffin,
Cavalier king Charles spaniel,
Miniature Pinscher,
Papillon,
Tibetan spaniel,
schipperke,
A cavalier king Charles spaniel would be a good choice to because they are very friendly!
Good luck with your dog:)

The greyhound and whippet i think won't fit your apartment size. Not just because they're big but because they also do a lot of exercises and workings too.
About the other two. I think choosing between the two, I'd go for I.G.
I had an experienced with a chihuahua before. They small and cute but they're so playful. Even though the apartment isn't that small(not big either). The apartment seemed to be a small house for them and for us. Going upstairs, there he is. Going them, he runs, then there he is. I think i can say they are the type of dogs with an ADHD. :)

A racing hound and even rescue whippet that was not raised with cats will rarely work out. they use small prey type animals to incite the run. Plus both of these will need more than just long walks. they need to run and an apartment is going to be too small and stressful for these two breeds. I have known a few Chi and they were all barkers. I would say the best would be the IG.
