not many realised that the force constant of a spring usually depends on its mass.

In a simple approach, you could regard a spring as if it was an elastic cord that obeys Hooke's Law.

In such case, the force constant k is given by
k = EA/L
where E is the Young's Modulus of the spring material,
A is the equivalent cross-sectional area of the spring
L is the equivalent natural length of the spring.

Since mass M = A.L.p
where p is the density of the spring material
A = M/L.p

Thus, k = E(M/L.p)/L = E.M/(p.L^2)
