Mushrooms are randomly distributed in a large field. The number of mushrooms per square metre can be modelled by a poisson distribution with mean 0.5. To have probability 0.95 of finding at least one mushroom in the field, how large should be the radius of a circular region to be searched?

Step 1 : Find out the required λ

e^(-λ) = 1 - 0.95 => λ = 2.9957

Step: 2

mean no. of mushrooms per m^2 = 0.5

mean no. of mushrooms per (2.9957/0.5 = 5.9914) m^2 = 2.9957

(pi)r^2 = 5.9914 => r = 1.381

So, the radius of a circular region should be at least 1.381 m
