Future of Students in Civil Engg - What will happen?

I want to start this by posing a question to all of the members - "Does studying Civil Engineering gives you a successful life with a good job and nice pay ?" (or) "Do a student should pick Civil Engineering as a degree only when hes out of options in other engg fields?"

At first when I joined Birla Institute of Technology and Science - Pilani with a Civil Engg Major, I thought that its my destiny to be a great designer or constructor and one day my name will be engraved on one the most magnificent structure I will design. With this passion I scored well in subjects, proved myself in all the careers and I stood number one in class when related to structural analysis concepts.

Though I got a good GPA or percentage at the end of my final semester in undergrad I wasn't offered any job back in India. One company called MIDMAC Contracting Company from Doha,Qatar gave me good offer and nice job. But with in one month of my graduation, that offer was also gone - reason was recession problem. After this I tried several jobs, every company started to use the word recession and stopped recruiting though they got plenty of work. I some how started to feel that companies were using the word recession and not recruiting people and saving more money for themselves. Any how all this is aside, still I haven't given up on Civil Engg & I took up Structural Engg Master's degree in USA. Currently I am pursuing it. I am the topper of the batch here.

I completed my 1st year in Master's now in USA at University of Florida. I started applying for Internships. Same problem started again though I am the topper of the batch no company wants to hire me. Don't know why(might be citizenship/US residency coming in-between recruiting talented people), even the students around me with low GPA get recruited for interns but I won't. I don't understand whats happening with my life. Is this the same thing happening will all Civil Engineers of the world who are at an entry level position.

Every company wants experienced people. Then who's gonna train the new fellas in to this industry. Soon all the experienced professional get expired and there should be someone carrying the legacy of the Civil knowledge. But no company wants to train freshers by giving them salary. I don't know whether the company is making the mistake or else is it the students. But final thing is students who want to do Civil Engineering in future perish. I don't want this to happen. I am starting to think now whether I made a huge fault selecting Civil Engg as my profession and now Structural Engg Master's degree. Please I am confused whether to stay in this field or not. I don't want to move to a different field now, and waste 8 more years studying this new field.

I know that there are many experienced people out here. Kindly take some time to give a thought on this topic, Its not my own life at stake its about all the future students of Civil Engg and its branches. Please advice what to do and hope the replies to this question may help other future students.

Thank you for reading my entire question,
I would appreciate if u could spare some more time and push-in your inputs in to this,

Regards,
Nitesh.

The Occupation outlook for Civil Engineers is expected to be about average for the near future, although the recent recession has caused many in the engineering profession whom where considering retirement to stay in their career a bit longer.

The citizen-ship issue might be a barrier in some instances, but seeing as civil engineers don't generally require security clearances and such it shouldn't be to bad as long as you have proper authorization to work in the US.

A big problem with most engineer students I have noticed these days are "soft skills". Have you considered taking a resume writing and interviewing seminar?

I m already completed BSc. in civil engg. Its a good field of study. Now a days the civil enng related problems in our life is increasing. In another side its big field of research.Structural,Architectural,Repairing,Rood constructions,Surveying,Soil types,River training works, and so many topic.......so i think civil engg students have to do so many things in over all world.

My daughter gets her PhD in civil engineering this December and has found strong demand in the Pittsburgh area as well in Texas and North Dakota. However, many of the employers are city and state governments and they are prohibited from using H-1B workers or sponsoring immigration. As for private firms, if you are very, very good and are already experienced in some fields they may sponsor an H-1B. Otherwise most will not bother.

My Canadian daughter is getting her PhD at a US school but already has her green card. She has even already possessed a US Secret clearance. Her specialty is transportation and even before the started university in 2004 she was already an expert in this field. When we visited NYC in 2002, she passed on the Statue of Liberty but instead wanted to examine the construction of the subway system. By 2005 she had already been a casual worker with Amtrak. She once had to help repair a dining car in Montana in 30 below weather. By 2008 she had also done over 25,000 miles on Amtrak, driven a diesel locomotive and knew the US interstate system and major air route system by memory. While getting her masters she took a semester off to do a fellowship in Washington DC where she participated in transportation policy making and worked with several US government agencies including Congress. My point is that this is the sort of things employers are looking for. Things a candidate has done above and beyond their school curriculum.

Hopefully you did not limit yourself to what your school asked you to do and have stuff like this you can add to your resume as experience. Because if you have not the aggressive kids who are passionate for the field, like my daughter, will take away the jobs you may apply for.
