Hi,
Now a days the Hard drives are SATA. their RPM is much higher and they are still unstable unlike the old PATA driver. Abrupt shutting downs may not only damage the HDD, but due to this damage you might loose data, or the Operating system may get corrupt. The damage is not due to the power loss but due to the voltage fluctuation just before the complete power goes off. There was a time when switching off from the button directly use to cause issue but later this feature was incorporated both in Bios and Windows Xp onwards OS. SO now shutting down using the button is not a problem but power fluctuations are still a thing to worry about. Recommend the use of a UPS ( Uninterrupted Power Supply.
