The United States of America (also referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, or America)

Is "the USA" or "the U.S.A." correct? Why?
Is "the U.S." or "the US" correct? Why?
What's the formal and informal way to call our country? Which one should I use when I write an article? Which one is more appropriate when I make a conversation with people?

Thanks for helping!

I think that any of them would be fine to use.

The country's formal name is The United State of America.

"U.S.A." or "U.S." is the formal abbreviation, but you more often see "US" or "USA' in every day writing.

In an article, the formal name is normally used the first time, then an abbreviation throughout the rest of the article.

In conversation, people normally refer to the "US" or "America."

Thanks for caring.

Always, ALWAYS, use periods. Otherwise you pronounce the whole thing. Sure, people will get what you're trying to say, but it's still incorrect. If it's just US it looks like yours shouting 'us'. And the informal way to refer to our country is U.S. or U.S.A, and usually you just use U.S. because everyone will know what you're talking about with that one.
