Hi,
I might be moving to China this summer and I'm curious about the knife and gun laws there. Specifically, fixed blades and pocketknifes, and airsoft and paintball guns. Thx

No guns are legal in China, I suggest you learn the culture more in depth before your trip. There are many laws and regulations to know prior to living in China, otherwise you could find yourself arrested.

the cops are armed in large and developed areas in china but guns cannot be owned privately, knives are legal in mainland china, but this doesnt work in hong kong and macau, where knife laws are very restricted

To use it as a weapon, nothing is allowed.

Guns -

- Real guns are generally not allowed.

- But, you may be allowed to play with a real miltary guns in designed areas. I remember going to some tourist place with Chinese army/police taught you how to use a gun (with a fee). But it was years ago.

- Paint ball game certainly cannot carry around and displayed in the city. It may be allowed in designed area to play paintball. I knew it become a popular game in Hong Kong China.

- The colorful Toy game as water gun are allowed... even on street... Very popular guns for Chinese kids, and you may see them holding one chasing each other at park.

Knife...

- There aren't particular rule as long as you are not displaying it to public. Well.. in certain Tourist area, you are certainly welcome to hold a 9.5 feet Chinese knife and walk around publicly such as 青龙偃月刀http://baike.baidu.com/view/58203.htm. They are likely on sale for different type of knifes in the tourist store.

I am a Chinese. No guns, paintball guns are allowed in China. And in most big Chinese cities 50% young people can speak English very well. We respect foreigners. If you want to find hotels, restaurant, bus stations you can talk to someone who is wearing glasses, because he/she might be a college students and speaks English. Hope this can help.

I have been there twice and even the police did not have guns. Many people carry pocket knives though. I carried mine the whole time I was there. I use it a lot for work.
