Extracted from AL past paper: “ Explain why pure ethanol cannot be obtained by fractional distillation of an aqueous solution of ethanol.” Answer: Ethanol forms an azeotrope or constant boiling mixture with water. What is the azeotrope and constant boiling mixture? Can I answer “ fractional distillation only can separate the mixture of different boiling point between 30℃ “ ?

This is because aqueous ethanol forming azeotrope which is a mixture of ethanol + water having the same boiling point . Ethanol & water have different boiling points but when mix them together they form a mixture fused together cannot be separated by fractional distillation .

When you heat up the solution reaching their boiling point , the vapour will contain fix % of ethanol + water . Not a single item .
