For the most part laptops use different processors than desktops.

We can compare the Intel Capella (1st gen core i3, i5, and i7) processors. Mobile processors are like the i3-350m, i5-540m, and i7-720qm. Desktop processors are like the i3-530, i5-750, and i7-860. The m in the mobile processors stand for mobile, and the qm on the i7 stands for quad core mobile. The desktop processors do not have a mobile symbol. The difference is that mobile processors are designed for mobile use (smaller, slower, more power efficient, and less heat) while desktop processors are designed for stationary use (larger, faster, less power efficient, more heat).
