What is important--indeed, crucial--is to establish a rapport and a common reality with the client. And to provide what is perceived as a safe and supportive environment.

I think it's validation. Many clients early in the process will talk about their mistakes and the bad things going on in their lives. It's important to validate their problems and help them view their mistakes as coping skills that went awry or outlasted their usefulness.
