My own experience can definitely help you. First, let me share with you a real event 5 years ago:
A S.4 student ( ranked 40th in a Band 1 school in his S.3. ) quited after Mid-Year and opt for Australia study, but he could not adopt the environment and returned 9 months later ( Nov. 2006 ).
He contacted the old school, and the school enables him to re-enter the school to sit for HKCEE in 2007!
Why I use "!"? He returned in Nov. and 5 months later HKCEE would come, and he has not studied S.4 Term 2 and S.5 Term 1 materials, and the deadline for HKCEE application was over! Can he have enough time and ability to sit for it?
The problem was finally solved amazingly.
(a) The teacher in-charge of HKCEE application negotiated with HKEA officials and got a special approval for the boy to apply after the deadline with higher cost.
(b) The S.5 teachers offered supp. lessons after school for him to chase back the materials from early Nov. to late March.
He eventually got 19 points and was eligible to study S.6! After 2009 AL, he has entered the local university and he is now Year 2!
His situation is similar to you, from the position in school to the place of overseas study. But you are better than him, because it is now NSS 334 that the public exam. will be held only in S.6, not S.5. If you compare to the boy I mentioned above, you have more time to compensate and chase the loss.
Never consider S.6 application for you need to have a pass in HKCEE before you can sit for HKALE, but you have not taken HKCEE before. You do not have enough knowledge to sit for the last HKALE in 2012. Your own target is NSS Year 2 ( i.e. Form 5 ).
You should actively consult your old schools for such a transfer. Once you can show your sincerity in return, your overseas experience can help you becoming more mature and more academically minded, and can convince the school management, I am sure you can return.
Hope my advice are useful.
