An object of mass 1000kg is tied to the bottom of a pond with a light chain.
If the tension in the chain is 1500N,what is the mass of water displaced by the object?

Since the object is in equilibrium,
upthrust = weight of object + tension in the chain

but weight of object = 1000g N = 10,000 N (take g = 10 m/s2)
and tension in the chain = 1500 N
thus, upthrust = (10 000 + 1500) N = 11 500 N

By Archimedeus Principle, upthrust = weight of water displaced
hence, weight of water displaced = 11 500 N
mass of water displaced = 11500/g kg = 1150 kg
