It depends on what you mean.

If you mean the opposite of 4^2, which is what you wrote, then the answer is -16.

If you mean the square of -4, then the answer is (-4)^2 = 16.

What does -4 squared mean? -4^2 or (-4)^2 ?

-4^2
= -1 * 4^2
= -1 * 16
= -16

(-4)^2
= (-4)(-4)
= 16

If it is -4^2 then it is -16. If it is (-4)^2 then it is 16.

If it isn't in the brackets then the negative is not squared

Positive 16.

-4 x -4 = 16

You are multiplying a negative by a negative so it becomes a positive. This happens when you square any negative number:

-2 x -2 = 4

-10 x -10 = 100
