An overhanging beam is simply supported at points A and E.It
carries four point-loads of 40 kN at point B, 20 kN at point C,20kN
at point D and 20kN at point F respectively as shown in Fig.Q

Determine the support reactions at points A and E

Let Ra and Re be the support reactions at A and E respectively

For equilibrium in the vertical direction,
Ra + Re = (40 + 20 + 20 + 20) kN
i.e. Ra + Re = 100 kN ------------------- (1)

Taking moment about A,
clockwise moment = (40x2 + 20x4 + 20x6 + 20x10) kN-m = 480 kN-m
counterclockwise moment = Re x 8
At equilibrium,
480 = 8Re
i.e. Re = 60 kN

substitute the value of Re into (1)
Ra = (100 - 60) kN = 40 kN
