1. Describe how you would carry out the following separation: Separating all the substances from a mixture of seawater and sand.

Firstly, the mixture is filtered. The residue left on the filter paper is the sand.

Then, the filtrate is distilled. The distillate obtain is the water, and the residue left in the flask is the dissolved substances in the seawater which contain mainly sodium chloride.

2.The boiling points of liquid X and liquid Y are 98℃ and 120℃ respectively. Can X and Y be separated from a mixture of X, Y and water? Explain your answer.

If X, Y and water are immiscible, they can be separated by using a separating funnel.

If X, Y and water are miscible, they cannot be separated. Mixtures of miscible liquids are usually separated by fractional distillation due to the difference in boiling points of the components. X and water cannot be well separated by fractional distillation because their boiling points are very close ( 98°C and 100°C respectively).
