Both visible light and infared are electromagnetic waves in nature. They all undergo reflection and refraction when travel from one medium to another.

Optical fibre uses total internal reflection for the transmission of optical signals. If a material of suitable refractive index is chosen as coating in an optical fibre, infared could also be made to total internally reflected as it goes along in the fibre, thus transmitting data information in computer networks.
