I think people use "truth" and "honesty" interchangeably.

Someone can be honest, but that might not be an objective truth.

In objective things, the truth is the truth; a verifiable fact. In subjective things- ie; "you are ugly"- it's totally dependent on variables, and isn't the truth at all except to those who agree, which still makes it only an opinion. Then you come to politicians, in which case almost all truth becomes illusion and nothing labeled as truth can be determined to really mean anything.

As for being a cliche, it depends on when and how it's applied.
