I can help you by listing the possibilities:
1) Your e-mail address list was captured by some firms in which their business are sending different business advertisements for promotion / junk-mails to attack different a/c servers. Probably your e-mail was detected for you login in some public areas without much protection ( like those Wi-Fi areas ), left your address in some websites which are actually the e-mail collection centre of certain firms, etc.
2) Your hard-disk has virus / spyware. I received some e-mails from the persons I know in the mail-list, and I am sure they were not the senders for the messages are also irrelevant and have promotional purposes. I contacted them and I noted their PC had virus. Once they have removed the virus, the problem ceased automatically.
3) Your a/c info. was stolen via the flaws of your browser. You see, for examples, Microsoft released the service pack of I.E. each month for it admitted the raws there can let hackers hacked-in and took control of your machine from worldwide. You need to visit their official websites and download the latest version of XP files to update the browser engine.
4) You open some intentional e-mail attachments from hackers ( i.e. the name does not know ) and it has installed some spyware in your machine and took control of it. They can then use your e-mail a/c to send millions of junk-mails out to the mail list and even other receivers of different a/c.
Hence, I suggest you the following:
1) Use the anti-virus to detect the whole machine once, with updated virus definition exists. It can help removing virus and spyware installed.
2) Do not drop down the e-mail addresses easily and do not open those e-mails with unknown senders. Never download materials from unknown servers as well.
So far it is not a large problem. If you could increase your self-protection sense, you can avoid such happening in the future.
Hope I have helped you.
