I was there a few days ago, and I was shocked. I went into a supermarket at Hamiton, and everything was expensive. I assumed everything was in U.S. currency. How do people live there? Also, Taxi is more expensive than NYC.

They most likely expect rich american tourists to visit, so they will pay more for low/normal quality things.

It's a very small island and everything used there has to be imported.

bermuda is an island with very few natural resources. it's primary industry is tourism. the majority of the population work in the tourist industry
because it is an item just about everything they need has to be imported. and without roads or rail it has to come in by boat or air. both are more expensive than surface transport

hi, i'm a local.
thing is, we have to import everything, from cars and building materials all the way down to food. and as a result everything is at a higher cost of living. don't feel too bad for us though, we're something like the 3rd richest economy in the world, our jobs pay extremely well in comparison to the states, and our minimum wage is quite high aswell in order to compensate for the high cost of living.

Bermuda has 60,000 people living on a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic. The prices of everything are a function of supply and demand. Also, there is an artificial price hike to transfer wealth to the Bermudians in the form of immigration protections (e.g., you want to hire somebody, you must first show that no Bermudian can perform the task.)
