Compliment is at the surface level and could be sincere or may not be. It is a remark that expresses approval, admiration or respect. Compliment is to say to someone that you like how they look, or you like something they have done.

Praise is almost always sincere and is one of the highest levels of a compliment, especially in public. Praise has a connotation of being more substantial than just a compliment. Accolades are the highest level of praise that someone can receive.

You are the best student I ever had for the last twenty years. (Praise)
You are a good student. It is a pleasure to have you as my student. (Compliment)

You have the highest score in the whole school. (Praise)
You did well on this exam. (Compliment)

Example:
Praise the Lord.
She complimented me on my new hairstyle.
He complimented my cooking.

You might as well learn these words: applaud, rave, commend, laud, hail (usually passive)

praise 讚美(上帝); 表揚; 歌頌

Compliment Vs Praise

I see compliment as a mark of courtesy in return for someone that has first greeted you politely.

Example :
If a friend of yours say : "Hey you look wonderful tonight"
You return by saying : " hey ...you look the great too" <== Your remark is a compliment... you don't mean what you said but it just for formality that you said it on good will.

A praise on the other hand can be view as a more sincere compliment because this word are more frequently used when someone did a good job, get good results or even dress well, etc. Praise is an impromptu remark given in appreciation of some good.

Example :
Your friend say : " Hey AceOfSpades, you look real gorgeous tonight" <==
(with a raise of eye brow) that's is a praise, and it's usually heartfelt.

Of course, there are other words that's of higher degree than praise itself, and if you're generous enough to offer 20 points, I will be most willing to answer them to my best knowledge.
