The period of oscillation, T, of a simple pendulum is related to its length, l, by the formula T=2pi(l/g)^(1/2)
To find experimentally the acceleration of free fall by using a simple pendulum, a student takes the following data:
time for 15 oscillations : 14.4+-0.2s
length of the pendulum : 0.229+-0.001m
Which of the following is the most appropriate way of expressing the result?
A. 9.8+-0.2ms^-1
B. 9.8+-0/3ms^-1
C. 9.81+-0.32ms^-1
D. 9.810+-0.179ms^-1
E. 9.810+-0.315ms^-1

The correst answer is B. Why is C incorrect?

It is because the error given by the question is corrected to 1 sig. fig. (for example, error of time is 0.2s, error of length is 0.001m)

So, in your calculation of error, the numbers after the 1 sig. fig. is meaningless is physics.

That is, when you have calculated the error to be 0.32XXXXX ms^-1, the numbers after 3 is meaningless is physics.

So, it should be corrected to 1 sig. fig., following the significance figure given in the question.
