The grammatically correct version of the sentence is 'Metallica is awesome.' Metallica is a group of people but it is a group of people who are collectively known as Metallica. Therefore, Metallica is awesome.

It would be the same as saying "that company is quite large." Wells Fargo is a big bank. The lion pride is a force of nature. That class is an above average performer.

you say "the group is " 'the committee is" "the class is"

but

"the group members are..." "the committee members are" "the class pupils are"

but metallica is ONE group, so it is single and you use IS.

Grammatically 'Metallica' is singular, since it is one group of people. However, many people would say 'Metallica are awesome', thinking of the individual members of the group.

It's similar to saying: 'England are playing today' meaning the football team from England is playing.

"Metallica is awesome". If you wanted to use 'are' you could say "the guys in Metallica are awesome".

I would say Metallica is ............

Well if you are talking about the Metallica Genre then it should be "is". Since Metallica is just a genre.

Let's put English grammar to a test and see if it's a 'is' or an 'are'.

Metallica is a noun; you'll never hear: he metallica-ed something so it's a noun, to further specify it, Metallica is a pronoun which means it's a group/single individual's name.

A group is and a single one is also is, so how did it sounds right when Metallica are.

We say :
Only two members from the Metallica group are singing, Metallica(or they) are indeed awesome.
* when the subject refers to indivdual members of a group, the auxiliary verb follows to indicate a plural.

When a phrase (Matallica is/are awesome) is "cut and paste" from a sentence to verify its correctness in grammar. No one could really tell, not unless further details could be shown.

It ain't gut feeling or sound better.. it's the logic of grammar.
The answer is either one is right, depending what you really want to indicate.

It depends.

'is' refers to a single object, where as 'are' refers to a GROUP of something.

For example:

The apple IS red.
The apples ARE red.

If you are referring to metallica as a GROUP, then use 'are', however if you are referring to them as a single 'thing', then use 'is'.

Hope this helps. :)
