持英國駕照在美國可以遊客身份開車，如屬長期居住的話需考取美國的駕駛，英美沒有免試互換協議。在美國考牌需拿工作或學生簽證。

first, you can use internatinal license to drive in USA within a year.
if more than a year and you going to buy or lease a car. then you can apply the US driver license with necessary documents. passport, visa....etc.

What exactly do you mean "本國"?
But if you can get a International Driving Permit from where you are licensed, you can drive in the U.S.
If you hold an U.S. extended stay visa, like employment visa, you can in fact get a license there. (Sorry causal business does not count.)
