Problem solving (in english)

2010-12-03 12:55 pm
The story starts in a restaurant. 3 customers paid $10 each for a meal (total $30), but the actual bill is $25.
As they paid $5 extra, the waitress decided to give them back the money. But because $5 cannot be divided into 3 people, the waitress gives those 3 people $1 each exchange and she got the rest of the money (which is $2).

So, now we know each person paid $9 ($10 paid and given back $1), and $27 for 3 people. Also, the waitress got $2 in her pocket...

$27 + $ 2 = $29

Total start= $30
So, where is the $1 that is missing??

I can't solve this problem.. can anyone help me out?

You are misled by $30.00. Each person actually paid only $9. All together they pay $27.00. ($9.00 x 3)
$25.00 for the bill + $2.00 for the waitress = $27.00

Your assumption that the bill comes to $27.00 is wrong. The money that 3 customers pay ($27.00) included $2.00 tip for the waitress.

How can the actual cost be $29.00 because the three customers pay only $27.00 altogether?

Imagine another scenario 2:
The story starts in a restaurant. 3 customers pay $11 each for a meal (total $33), but the actual bill is $25.
As they pay $8 extra, the waitress decides to give them back the money. Because
$8 cannot be divided among 3 people, the waitress gives those 3 people $2 each
back and she gets the rest of the money (which is $2).
The calculation is still basically the same. You start with $27.00.
The only difference is each customer pays $11.00 and gets back $2.00 while the previous scenario is that they pay $10.00 each and each gets back $1.00.

Hope this can help.
