Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures states that when two or more gases which do not react with one another are in the same container, the total pressure is the sum of the pressures which each gas would exert by itself.

Pressure of a gas arises because of collision of gas molecules onto the walls of the container. It has been assumed in the Law that the gases do not react with each other. That is to say, the gas molecules bombard the container wall independently from one another. If the pressure given by a gas through its molecular bombardment is P1, and another gas gives a pressure of P2, and so on for other gases in the container, it is apparent that the total pressure experienced by the container wall is the sum of all molecular bombardment from all gases. Hence, the total pressure P1 + P2 +....etc.
