China was, and mostly still is, a communist dictatorship. They have been embracing some level of free enterprise in their country because of the demand for cheap Chinese labor.

I would say they are becoming more fascist than communist. Fascism allows free enterprise. and allows exploitive class war, but does not tolerate democracy.

China still arrests people for speaking out against the government.

FYI:
An earlier poster claimed that socialism is the government owning the means of production. That's not entirely correct.

Socialism is when the government owns some capital which provides goods and services. Private property is still allowed, and private businesses can exist in a socialist economy. Public services usually are not for profit, private services usually are for profit.

Communism is when the government controls all the means of producing goods and services, and private property is abolished.

Capitalism is when private, non-governmental, owners own the means of producing goods and services, usually for a profit.

When enough rich capitalists use their wealth to influence government, that tends to lead to monopolies. Monopolism leads to oligopolies. A country lead by the wealthy and elite.

Socialism refers to the public ownership or control of the means of production.

Market economy refers to the private ownership or control of the means of production.

So a socialist market economy is a contradiction in terms.

The reason China - ie the Chinese state - calls itself a socialist market economy is because they were embarrassed to admit that socialism was a failure and had to be abandoned in favour of a market economy, so they lied and called it a socialist market economy.
