A driver depresses the gas padel and his car accelerates steadily from rest at 4ms^-2. After 4s, he slightly releases the pedal and his car continues to move at a constant velocity. The car has a mass of 1500 kg, and a friction of 1500N acts on it throughout the journey.

The driver then releases the gas pedal completely. If he does not apply the brakes, calculate the distance travelled by the car before coming to a stop.

Velocity of car after 4 s = 4 x 4 m/s = 16 m/s

Use: work-done = change of kinetic energy
1500 x d = (1/2) x 1500 x 16^2
where d is the distance travelled by the car before coming to rest.
solve for d gives d = 128 m
