To Chin: I have not lived in THE US as long as you do, but I did spent 16 years living in 3 different states in the US, so I do have some experience regarding requirements on driver license and vehicle registration when moving to a new state.

Your information is not totally correct from the legal point of view. In California for example, If you become a California resident, you must get a California driver license within 10 (TEN) days.

因為每個地區的路牌都會因應當地的駕駛習慣和氣候而有所不同 (譬如中西部就會多點雪地及州際公路給大型車輛有關的路牌, 南部有些州份可以容許貨櫃車在較長較直的 Interstate Highway 或State Route 拖三個貨櫃而很多州不准許等), 所以由一個州搬到令一個州轉駕照時會需要重考筆試.

多謝 Kerria3 的認同.
很多州份現時都有你所說的電腦, 但限於英文, 有些州份會西班牙語, 其他語言只有"筆"試.
不過我看過中文版筆試, 翻譯得很差, 很多專用辭語都譯得模棱兩可. 所以建議如果唔係唔識英文的話, 都係考番英文版好D.
其他州嘅電腦版係唔可以翻轉頭check卷的, 即係答完一題後如果覺得好似錯就唔可以番轉頭改番. 傳統筆試就可以.

本人移民到NY時,持HK駕照.但要重新考筆試及路試.
今年四月從TX搬到CA. TX D/L已超過十年.但要考筆試.

絕對同意 mlmorpyramid 的說法：在美國由一個州搬到另一個州轉駕駛執照 要考筆試 ，
現在是在電腦上答選擇題， 因為有道路畫面， 所以更加方便 。持有香港車牌, 去到美國之後要轉當地車牌，也要考筆 （電腦）試。 例如問你交通燈由上到下順序是那幾種顏色。

由於美國 同香港 的道路通行方向不同 ，香港的車輛 靠道路左 側行駛，而美國車輛 靠道路右 側行駛。 所以由香港移居美國後， 駕駛時要特別注意， 尤其是轉彎的時候 。
謹給你一個小貼士： 當你到達路口將要轉彎時， 記住這句話：
（ 轉 【左】 過【對面 】） 。 很有用的。

外國人士得以持國際駕照於美國境內自由開車，條件是：
•他所持有的國際駕照尚在有效期限之內；
•並需隨車攜帶原國護照以備檢驗。
但若他想擁有加州駕駛執照，則無捷徑可循，他必需參加並且通過所有手續，包括驗證、繳費、筆試和路試。

first, i live in US over 30 years, i never heard that : even you have XXX State driver license,if you moved to another State, you have to re-take the driver exam again...? where this law come from..?? hahah.... you kidding me, right?



ok, let's answer the question; HK driver license can not directly exchange into ( the State you will reside ) license. you still need to go through the writen test ( your State may have Chinese test form ), and then take the road test.

since you already know how to drive, then go driver around on the street for few hours to get used with road traffic conditions. i believe the road test should not a problem to you.

driver license is controled under each State grovernment ( DMV ), not Federal. so, which State you are reside more than 1 year then you should apply that State license.
change State driver license is easy, --- your old license and new residence proof..... and pay the fee, of course.

加州不承認國際駕駛許可證，所以不用申請，但你可於到達加州短期內使用香港的車牌，之後就要重新考加州的車牌，包括筆試及路試。

亦切勿懶醒，於考路試時報上有香港車牌，萬一肥了，會被沒收，到時想扮遊客開車都難。

關於國際駕駛許可證，日內瓦公約是以國家名義簽署的，但在美國而言，道路駕駛法例是各州自行制訂的，例如加州不承認國際駕駛許可證，但可用香港的駕駛執照以遊客身份駕駛，德州承認國際駕駛許可證。


有香港人在某州，好像阿拉巴馬，忘記了，被州警截停，雖然同時出示國際駕駛許可證及香港的駕駛執照，仍然被票控無牌駕駛。

美國跟德國簽署的駕駛執照免試互換條約，是美國使館經美國商會推動下達成的，但只是部份州獲完全免試，部份州要考筆試（德文），而加州、紐約及NJ三州不獲任何免試資格，波多黎各及加拿大全部省則獲全免資格。
