How to look for job in the US?

I am a master student getting a civil engineering degree and I am not a US citizen nor green card holder. I am finishing up my degree in US and I am looking for job now, so I can start working after May, 2011. I keep sending resume to employer through the company website, and no response at all. So my question is, did I start my job search too early? since I am starting to work in May, and people now are looking for people available to work immediately, or should I take a different approach in job search?

there aren't that many jobs in civil engineering in the US. But all you can do is to keep applying. No, you are not starting too early, because it will take a lot of applications in order to get a job, and obviously you are not going to apply for the ones which specify that they need an immediate start... you are also not applying to the ones which specify that you have to be a citizen or permanent resident in order to apply...

What would increase chances is if you had done internships and work experience with various companies and they were happy with your work. In order to employ you a company will have to sponsor you for a work visa which will cost them extra money. So you have to offer something extra like that they already know they like your work or that you have actual work experience.

Maybe you also should try to figure out what friends who graduated before you did and how they found their first job and learn from their experiences.

Your job will require an H1B visa ... they take application for that starting April 1st for an Oct 1st starting date ..Of course the big problem is there are thousands of qualified grad every year
but employer want experienced workers and in the currebt recession there are few job openinng what there are will go to US citizens ..they dont cost $10k to employer which it will cost them for you ...Good luck ...Do not wait in the US

So they have a choice between you who will cause them a immigration nightmare or an american graduate wiho will not.

Face it you most likely will need to go home.

1) You have started at right time. Instead of applying for full time jobs, apply for internship for Spring 2011.
2) Start building your network. Just applying to companies will not get you job in this economy.
3) Since you will require H1B and with OPT rules, you have just 90 days from May 2011 to find a job.
4) When a job search approach is not working, try different one. It always starts with good resume.

Over 31 million Americans are desperately seeking work. The real unemployment rate was 22.5% in Sept. It has been 20% or higher for over 2 years now. You came to the US thinking that if you got a US degree, you'd be a shoo-in for a job, H1-b visa, and eventual green card. The joke's on you now. No jobs. Employers are not spending the time, money and hassle to get employment visas for foreign workers when so many Americans are readily available and cheaper! As for green cards, so many H1-b's ditched their employers as soon as they got the green card (leaving employers on the hook for 10 years for their support), that most employers wised up a decade or so ago and stopped sponsoring work visa holders for green cards.

There are NO jobs. Go home as soon as you graduate. We've started the second wave down in this Depression, and things are getting worse, not better.

After you finished studying in the US, you're going home. There is no path from a non-immigrant visa to lawful permanent resident. You were welcome in the US as long as you paid tuition, but the US has plenty of people looking for a job (about 35 million) who are US citizens or lawful permanent residents. Didn't you read about your visa before coming to the US? If not, now's the time to do that!
