問題:要suggest a test to distinguish the cmps:

ans:
put about 2 cm3 of ethanol into two test tubes,then add several drops of 2-bromo methylbenzene to one test tube and several drops of (bromomethyl)benzene to the other.

add 1 cm3 of aqueous of silver nitrate to both test tubes and heat to 70 degree. for the test tube containing (bromomethyl)benzene, a pale yellow precipitate of silver bromide will be formed as a hydrolytic reaction occurs.

2 cm3 of ethanol 有咩作用?唔加又點?

my guess:
as a solvent. the organic compounds are insoluble in water. when the compounds are added to the solution, they'll not mix.
however, both the compounds and solver nitrate solution are miscible in ethanol, enabling them to mix well for faster reaction.
