A particle A of mass M1 is suspended under the ceiling by a string of length L1.Another string of length L2 has one end connected to A and the other end
connected to a particle B which has mass M2. The system is at rest under
gravity and a horizontal strike is given to particle A such that it obtains an
instantaneous speed V, find the tensions of the two strings at the instant when
the strike is applied. Assume that both strings are light.

Let T1 and T2 be the tension in the strings at the instant when the strike is applied. Since at such instant, mass M2 is still at rest. Hence,

T2 = (M2)g, where g is the acceleration due to gravity

Consider mass M1, which has an instantaneous speed of V

T1 - [(M1)g + T2] = (M1).V^2/(L1)
i.e. T1 = (M1).V^2/(L1) + (M1)g + T2 = (M1).V^2/(L1) + (M1 + M2)g
