Need Help with My Dell Laptop Inspiron 1520?

The motherboard may have gone bad. Overheating can shorten the lifespan of a motherboard. If the battery is bad, you can buy an after market battery online for as little as $30. You can test the battery for charges using a VOM. In the meantime, let the charger plugged in for a while to see if the battery will recharge.

If this doesn't work the charger, battery or both need to be checked...
Press and hold the power button until it turns off (if it isn't already).
Remove the battery and charger/adapter, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to discharge any residual current.
Replace the battery and charger/adapter and turn on.

If the laptop is under warranty period, send it for fixing asap.
Otherwise, it is safe to consult with a good hardware engineer.

Your laptop possibly overheated and most likely the MB and or processor failed. Is it still under warranty?

Yes that has happened to my dell to BUT NOW I HAVE A MACBOOK PRO:) (lov'in it) you could of eather messed up you chareger inserter thingy ( the place on your computer where you put your charger in)- bent it out of the shape... Or you could have a vires (wich i think is very commen in dells.)
I had both the the charger, and vires situation in my dell when it passer away CRY ,CRY (but now i have a macbook pro y=YAY, YAY.
