I visited Shanghai in 2006 and I don't know if it's still like that and if people know how it is now I'd like to hear an update. When I visited Shanghai I was surprised to see most of the lights like from the tall buildings all go out at 11PM. After 11PM it gets rather dark because many of the lights are turned off. The subway trains end at around 10:45 PM so if you're going anywhere in Shanghai after 11PM you have to use a taxi. So if you're used to the night time bright lights in the U.S(like a 24 hour city such as Las Vegas, New York). you might be surprised to find many of the lights being turned off after 11PM and the city rather dark during the night time.
