How to make my dog stop scratching?

My dog digs at his ears and face and chews on his feet. I know these are signs of atopy or a food allergy. I don't have the money right now to take him to the vet to have all sorts of costly test run on him. How do I help him with out breaking my bank or letting him suffer? He is about 10 months old and has just recently started to do this to the point that he has scabs on his ears and around his eyes and nose. He will lay on the floor and just scratch until I make him stop!

If you suspect a food allergy that is not a vet thing. Go to a good pet store and get a limited ingredient dog food. They are meat based and do not have cereal in them. Natural Balance or Blue Buffalo are two.

I'd suggest trying to supplement his dog food with Dinovite and maybe even switch to a diet of just boiled chicken, chicken broth, and rice. My dog has some bad allergies and we tried using Dinovite after he kept having digestive problems. It actually helped out a lot. Plus, we worked with our vet to make some changes to his overall lifestyle and so far, it seems to have worked.

This does not seem normal at all! I have no idea how you would stop him from doing this but all I can say is...TAKE HIM TO THE VET! Puppies have not built up there imune system yet and if your pup gets a desease he may die :(

my husky has allergies to wet grass and weeds that touch his skin and even with his thick fur his belly, legs ,face and ears break out and he scratches non stop. after many vet exams and loads of money i started him on omega fish oil, brewers yeast, garlic and made a spray of equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water and spray all the bad areas and rub it in and he is much better.use the spay on all the itchy areas several times a day and give him the pills daily along with wiping him down with a dry towel after he comes in to get any moisture or pollens off his skin.u can also give him a benadryal pill in the am and pm and if he is over 50 lbs he can have a whole one but under cut the pill in half.after his itchies calm down cut the benadryal down and just give a half in the am and pm and use the natural remedies.food allergies are hard to detect so u might want to start cooking for him on ur own.cook up skinless chicken, stew beef or any kind of meat and add rice and veggis then u can made enough for a few days until u run out.bear is almost 10 yrs old and after many medications from the vet and lots of money forked out over the yrs he is feeling pretty good and i keep him out of anything outside wet. he loves the winter so he can have a walk when the weather is nice and cool and dry. his breakouts start in the spring and summer with the humidity and last into the fall until it snows then he has a good couple of mths. good luck

The simplest answer is fleas. He might even have ticks.

If not, change his food and see how he reacts. It could be the humidity level in Fall that affects him.

Internal Parasites..........worms etc
Diet...grain filled food
Ear Problems..........from mites to yeast infections
Care........lack of grooming .....Shedding their coat can cause itchiness........too much bathing dries the coat and skin, not rinsing out all the chemicals from the shampoo will also cause this.
Anal Gland Problems...often due to diet/ be over weight
Environmental..... using chemicals on floors, carpets, or lawn be aware that these chemicals as it can make your dog itchy. Even the detergent used to wash a dogs bedding can make him, or her, itchy.
Climate....Dry climates often result in drier skin, and therefor more itching. Dogs can suffer from sunburn which, as in humans, will cause itching.
Mange.....caused by mites
Fleas.....cause itching and worms

All these can be helped with dily grooming, a good grain free food or better still Raw and Bone, using neem oil externally and powdered neem internally which boosts the immune system, it also protects form parasites ( internal & external) and promotes a health coat/skin/teeth/bones. Be careful of putting neem oil on or near open sores as it is very powerful and can cause more issues...so these need salt water bathing.................without seeing your dog it is impossible to tell however if it is not fleas it is likely to be mites/mange.....a good groom, a bath with an oatmeal dog shampoo with some neem oil added will easy it, then make a neem oil spray and groom daily ( plus a grain free food)...however if this continues then go and get it checked out professionally

Try switching his food and see how he does. When looking for a food you want to stay away from by-products, ground yellow corn, wheat, and any artificial flavors or colors. Also switch up the main protein source. A lot of times it is the protein source that dogs are (or become, even after many years) allergic to. So if your dog is on a chicken based food now switch to lamb, venison, or herring. I would try a venison based diet first simply because there aren't many dogs that are allergic to venison. Nutro Natural Choice Venison Meal & Whole Brown Rice is an excellent food. No by-products, which can include heads, feet and intestines. No ground yellow corn, which is a filler and a big allergen among pups. No wheat, which is another big allergen for dogs. And no artificial colors or flavors. Nutro also has the highest levels of essential fatty acids (Omega 3 & 6) to help promote healthy skin and coat and also reduce shedding. They are actually the only company that I know of the guarantees healthy skin & coat. And all of their foods are 100% guaranteed! So give it a few weeks, if you don’t notice a difference, return the food (with your receipt), and either get another formula or get your money back.

Hope this helps!
