The escape speed of a hypothetical planet X is 2x10^4 ms-1 and its surface temperature is 400K. It is known that the mass of one mole of hydrogen gas is 2g, determine whether hydrogen gas can be found on planet X.

Kinetic energy of 1 mole (2 g ) of hydrogen
= (1/2).(2/1000).v^2
where v is the rms speed of hydrogen
But according th the kinetic theory,
kinetic enrgy = (3/2).R.T
where R is the Universal Gas Constant (= 8.31 J/mole.K), and T is the absolute temperature of hydrogen

Hence, (1/2).(2/1000).v^2 = (3/2).(8.31).(400)
solve for v gives v = 2233 m/s

Therefore, the rms speed of hydrogen is lower than the escape velocity. It is thus expected to find hydrogen on that planet.
